Omar Samra Named UN Goodwill Ambassador
Omar Samra, one of the most popular speakers at TEDxBend 2016, has been named a UN Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Egypt. In his role, Samra will “promote and advocate for environment’s protection and youth empowerment…[and] lend his influence and expertise to promote environmental protection, climate change awareness, youth empowerment and the support of sustainable development goals,” according to a UNDP statement.
“I firmly believe that together with UNDP, we have found the perfect partnership to help effectively tackle some of the biggest challenges relating to conserving our environment and empowering our youth today. I hope that many more people and organizations join us on this journey. I’m confident that with our work, and the media’s voice, we can make a lasting positive difference that is felt by everyone,” said Samra during his speech at the appointment announcement in September.
Omar Samra is a father, a successful entrepreneur, and the first Egyptian – one of less than 40 people in history – to complete the Explorer’s Grand Slam, an adventurer’s challenge to reach the north and south pole and climb the Seven Summits. During the last TEDxBend conference, he spoke about dealing with his personal tragedy and discovering why we are all here: to heal and to help heal each other.
